Antony Chawagarira MASVINGO – IN a significant development for Zimbabwe’s energy landscape, the 5MW Great Zimbabwe Hydropower Project has been officially commissioned, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing the province’s power stability.
GUGLER Water Turbines is pleased to announce the successful commissioning of the Great Zimbabwe Hydropower plant at the dam wall of Lake Mutiriki in Zimbabwe. Officially completed in November 2024, this project represents a significant milestone in expanding Zimbabwe’s renewable energy capacity.
Zimbabwe has long faced electricity shortages, with a deficit often exceeding 1,500 MW. This has led to frequent power cuts and a reliance on costly electricity imports and fossil fuels. The Great Zimbabwe Hydropower Plant offers a sustainable alternative, injecting renewable energy directly into the national grid.
With its strategic design and promising impact, the hydropower plant is poised to contribute meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s energy landscape, environment, and communities. The plant is equipped with two state-of-the-art Francis turbines, each with a capacity of 2.7 MW, resulting in a total power output of 5.4 MW.
Great Zimbabwe Hydro was one of the early projects to get a generation licence in Zimbabwe. It is was also the first project to be built adjacent to an existing dam infrastructure and the first hydro power project that leased land from the water authority Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and ZIMparks.
Located near the historical Great Zimbabwe Ruins in Masvingo, the 5 MW hydroelectric facility is the first in Zimbabwe to be built adjacent to an existing Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) dam (Lake Mutirikwi) , setting a new precedent in the country’s energy infrastructure
