Table 7 presents a comparative assessment of these ESSs on a quantitative scale. A scale of 1 to 5 is employed in this study to assess various energy storage technologies based on five key performance metrics: energy density, cost, scalability, longevity, and energy efficiency, totalling upto 25 for each ESS.
Three methods were used to rank electricity storage technologies: fixed charging price, market-based charging price, and integration into a fully renewable energy sys-tem. The comparison of the three methodologies shows a robust economic ranking of the technologies.
In this paper, all current and near-future energy storage technologies are compared for three different scenarios: (1) fixed electricity buy-in price, (2) market-based electricity buy-in price, and (3) energy storage integrated into a fully renewable electricity system.
However, many existing reviews focus only on specific classes of the ESS, leaving a gap for a holistic and quantitative evaluation. This review seeks to bridge this gap by comparing various energy storage technologies.
1.2. Energy storage systems (ESS) Energy storage systems (ESSs) successfully mitigate renewable energy intermittency and unreliability. These systems function in charge, storage and discharging modes thereby offering effective energy management, less spillage and a stable power grid.
The environmental performance of the three stationary energy storage options is assessed using a set of internationally recognized Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) indicators.
