The government has received 16 offers for the development of Malta’s first large-scale utility battery energy storage systems, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli told The Malta Independent.
Malta’s grid-scale, long-duration energy storage system helps governments, utilities, and grid operators transition to low-cost, carbon free renewable energy while enhancing energy security. Storing electricity for eight hours to eight days or longer, the solution reduces CO 2 emissions and dependence on natural gas.

The battery energy storage systems (BESS) will be located in Marsa and Delimara, on Enemalta grounds in both localities. First announced in June 2023, the project is being led by Interconnect Malta, an Energy Ministry agency responsible for energy infrastructure projects.
